Practice Mode is a training suite designed for UG Pro subscribers. It transforms static tabs into an interactive teacher that listens to your instrument, analyzes your timing, and helps you master every note of a song.
Note: Practice Mode is currently available exclusively in the Ultimate Guitar app.
Accessing Practice mode
Official Tabs
To begin using Practice Mode:
• Open an Official Tab for the song you want to learn
• Locate the Practice icon at the bottom of the screen
• Tap the Practice icon to open the practice mode interface
After tapping the icon, the app opens a dedicated practice page where you can configure your training session
Chords Tabs
Practice Mode is also available for Chords tabs.
• Open a Chords tab in the mobile application
• Tap the Practice icon
• Start playing the chords of the song while following the tab
The application listens to your playing using your device's microphone and provides feedback on your performance
Configuring your practice session
Before starting the interactive session in Official tabs, use the available controls to configure your practice environment.
Select Instrument
Choose the instrument track you want to focus on during the practice session
Sections
Select the specific section of the song that you want to practice
Adjust Speed
Adjust the tempo of the playback. Slowing down the tempo helps when learning complex parts, while increasing the speed can help develop precision and dexterity
Settings (Gear Icon)
Tap the gear icon to open additional settings. These include:
• Notation Style - select Standard notation, Tablature, or both
• Playback Options - configure playback behavior
• Repeat Count - define how many times the selected section repeats
• Count-in Timer - enable or disable the count-in before playback starts
Starting the Interactive Session
Practice Mode uses your device's microphone to listen to your performance as you play along with the tab.
To start the session:
• Tap the Start icon
• A 4-second count-in begins, giving you time to prepare your instrument
• Play along with the scrolling notation while the app tracks your notes and chords in real time
When the selected section ends, the app processes your performance and prepares the analysis
Reviewing your results
After the practice session finishes, Practice Mode provides a detailed performance breakdown.
Accuracy & Rhythm
Your performance is evaluated and displayed as percentage scores for accuracy and rhythm.
See Mistakes
Tap See Mistakes to display the notation with mistakes highlighted, showing exactly where errors occurred.
Listen Back
Use this feature to listen to your recorded performance and review the nuances of your playing.
Retry
Tap Retry to immediately repeat the practice session and aim for a higher score.
